A 10th trip to the Super Bowl puts Tom Brady in some exclusive company across sports.

Brady’s 10th trip to the title round comes a few months after LeBron James did the same in the NBA Finals, making them the only players in the four major North American sports leagues to do that in more than 30 years.

Brady and James are the first players to make it to the title round for a 10th time since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it in his final season in the NBA in 1989.

In all, 24 players have done that in any of the leagues, according to research from SportRadar, with most of them having been part of dynasties with the Boston Celtics, New York Yankees or Montreal Canadiens.

Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra has the most championship round appearances getting there 14 times in his 18 seasons with the Yankees.

Berra’s former teammate, Mickey Mantle, Celtics legend Bill Russell, and hockey stars Jean Beliveau, Red Kelly, Henri Richard and Maurice Richard are next with 12 apiece.

They are followed by Sam Jones (NBA), Whitey Ford (MLB), Doug Harvey (NHL), Bert Olmstead (NHL) and Jean-Guy Talbot (NHL).

The three others baseball players to go to the World Series are Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Elston Howard.

Six other hockey players did it in the Stanley Cup Final: Bernie Geoffrion, Gordie Howe, Tom Johnson, Dickie Moore, Jacques Plante and Claude Provost.

A win on Sunday would be Brady’s seventh championship to go along with his three regular season MVP awards, a feat only Russell, Mantle, Berra, and DiMaggio have achieved in the four major sports leagues.

TITLETOWN

The Buccaneers are just the latest team from Tampa to make it to the title game, following the NHL’s Lightning and baseball’s Rays, who made it last fall.

When the Super Bowl kicks off, it will be 133 days since Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. The World Series was played in between the two. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that’s the second shortest span for a metro area to appear in three championships in the four major North American team sports leagues. In 2003, the Devils, Nets and Yankees all made it to the title round in a span one day shorter than Tampa’s.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Defenses have had a hard time slowing down Kansas City’s dynamic duo of Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce this postseason. Hill has 17 catches for 282 yards, while Kelce has 21 catches for 227 yards.

Both have topped 100 yards receiving in the first two playoff games and can be the first set of teammates to do that three games in a row in a single postseason.

Kelce and Hill can be the third set of teammates each to top 300 yards receiving in a single postseason, joining Carolina’s Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad (2003) and New England’s Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan (2016).

SLOW STARTS, STRONG FINISHES

Brady has taken time to get started in his first nine trips to the Super Bowl. Brady has been the quarterback for 17 drives in the Super Bowl that that started and ended in the first quarter and has scored on only one of those possessions, a field goal against Philadelphia in Super Bowl 52.

The fourth quarter has been a completely different story for Brady in those games. He led game-winning field goal drives in his first two trips to the title game and has been even better late in the game in his last four trips. Brady is 47 for 63 for 538 yards, four TDs, no interceptions and a 121 rating in the fourth quarter and overtime of those games.

CLOSING TIME

When the game is on the line, the Tampa Bay pass rush is usually at its best. Jason Pierre-Paul leads the NFL with seven sacks in the fourth quarter for regular season and playoff games, with teammates Shaquil Barrett and Devin White tied for the second most with five apiece.

Overall the Bucs have 27 sacks in the fourth quarter, the most for any team in the past 30 seasons.

PLAYOFF LENNY

Bucs running back Leonard Fournette has been on an impressive playoff run. He has gained an NFL-best 313 yards from scrimmage with TDs in each playoff game so far this postseason. With a TD in the Super Bowl, Fournette will join Terrell Davis (1997 season) and Larry Fitzgerald (2008) as the only players to score in four playoff games in a single postseason.

Fournette has seven TDs in six career playoff games and his streak of five straight with at least 50 yards rushing and a TD is tied for the third longest in history.

Serena Williams’ daughter sports mini-me version of mom’s one-legged catsuit at tennis practice

TODAY — Serena Williams’ daughter, Olympia, just sported a mini version of her mom’s one-legged catsuit, and she couldn’t have looked more adorable.

The 3-year-old’s parents posted several pictures of her on Instagram with the caption: “Practice makes…”

The catsuit is identical to the one her mom wore, but Olympia made the outfit her own and added her own flair by accessorizing it with black, gray, and pink sneakers and a darling hairstyle.

In the comments of the post, Williams joked that her husband, Alexis Ohanian, wasn’t supposed to share these photos just yet.

“Awwwww mannnnnn I asked you to save this post until I was next to her side by side in my same outfit,” she wrote and added two eye roll emoji. “Oophhh I guess I’ll have to pull the plug from your phone tonight. And you wake up wondering why you have no battery.”

William’s debuted the iconic one-legged catsuit in February at the Australian open and paired the piece with a blue headband and white sneakers with pink trim. She said the design of the unique piece was a tribute to another legendary athlete.

“I was inspired by Flo-Jo, who was a wonderful track athlete, amazing athlete when I was growing up,” she said during a post-match press conference.

This isn’t the first instance of Olympia following in her mother’s footsteps. In 2018, she wore a black tennis tutu just like the one her mom wore at the U.S. Open.

And again in 2020 when the pair turned heads with identical purple and black tennis outfits.

In the comments of the post, Williams joked that her husband, Alexis Ohanian, wasn’t supposed to share these photos just yet.

Tennis star Naomi Osaka ignited a firestorm when she announced that she would not participate in any post-match interviews at the French Open due to concerns about her mental health. After she was fined by tournament officials, she said she had been dealing with bouts of depression and talking to reporters would bring on anxiety. She proceeded to withdraw from the tournament. What has Osaka’s decision forced us to look at when it comes to sports heroes? As fans? In the media? Joining us to talk about it are Barb Anthony, one of the founders of the Northeast Ohio Women’s Sports Alliance; Special Jennings, girls basketball coach at Montverde Academy in Orlando, Florida; and Dr. Matthew Sacco, a health and sport/performance psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic.

Kentucky Derby 2021 odds, top contenders: Legendary expert who nailed Tiz the Law enters surprising picks

Legendary horse racing handicapper Hammerin’ Hank Goldberg goes straight to the source for his Kentucky Derby picks 2021

Published

on

Churchill Downs has hosted the Kentucky Derby continuously since 1875, making it the longest-running major American sporting event, but last year it faced one of its most serious challenges because of the coronavirus pandemic. The race was postponed to September and no fans were allowed in attendance, but the Kentucky Derby 2021 brings back normalcy, as the raves moves back to the first Saturday in May. Post time is set for 6:57 p.m. ET and 19 horses will make up the 2020 Kentucky Derby field.

Essential Quality and Rock Your World both enter Saturday undefeated and are the favorites in the 2021 Kentucky Derby odds, with Essential Quality at 2-1 and Rock Your World at 5-1. However, other major stakes winners include Florida Derby champion Known Agenda (6-1), Louisiana Derby victor Hot Rod Charlie (8-1), and Arkansas Derby winner Super Stock (30-1). Before making any 2021 Kentucky Derby picks, you need to see the latest horse racing predictions from legendary handicapper Hammerin’ Hank Goldberg.

The former horse racing analyst for ESPN and NBC, Goldberg became a legendary handicapper by going straight to the source. In 2004, he had dinner before the Belmont Stakes with trainer Nick Zito at a pizzeria in Queens. The dinner led Goldberg to play Zito’s 36-1 monster longshot Birdstone to win and on top of his exacta, trifecta and superfecta bets. When Birdstone shocked the world, Goldberg won $24,000.

His success has continued at SportsLine. In the San Felipe Stakes in March, Hammer gave out a $20 exacta that paid 9-1. In the Belmont Stakes in June, Goldberg was all over Tiz the Law, who scored a convincing victory in the year’s first Triple Crown race. In the Blue Grass Stakes, Hammer nailed the Art Collector-Swiss Skydiver exacta. In July, he hit the Authentic-Ny Traffic exacta in the Haskell. In August in the Pacific Classic, he gave out the Maximum Security-Sharp Samurai exacta.

Before last year’s Kentucky Derby, trainer Bob Baffert told Goldberg that Authentic was his best Derby runner. As a result, Goldberg listed him among his top horses, and Authentic held off Tiz the Law by almost four lengths. Anyone who has followed Goldberg’s lead is way up.

Now, Goldberg has studied the 2021 Kentucky Derby field and released his picks, predictions and top contenders only at SportsLine.

Top 2021 Kentucky Derby predictions

For the 147th Run for the Roses, Goldberg is completely fading Rock Your World, even though he is one of the top favorites and won the Santa Anita Derby. Rock Your World’s father Candy Ride was an undefeated, Argentina-bred horse who won the Pacific Classic at Del Mar Raceway in 2003. His mother, Charm the Maker, won three times in 18 career starts.

Rock Your World had a rather inauspicious start to his career as well, not running as a two-year-old and making his first two starts on turf before dazzling in his first trip on dirt in the Santa Anita Derby. That 4 3/4-length victory came with a Beyer Speed Figure of 100, which is the best of any horse in the 2021 Kentucky Derby field, but the general lack of experience and trainer John Sadler’s lack of success at the Kentucky Derby (his best finish was sixth with Corby in 1993) makes 5-1 a tough price to swallow for Goldberg.

Another curveball: Goldberg is high on Mandaloun, even though he’s a big 15-1 long shot. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. After an impressive performance to win the Risen Star Stakes at Louisiana Fair Grounds, Mandaloun returned to the site of the victory as the 6-5 favorite in the Louisiana Derby, but had an extremely poor showing and wound up finishing sixth.

Trainer Brad Cox didn’t find anything wrong with Mandaloun after the race, but the oddity of the performance has Goldberg wondering if the performance was merely a one-off. More attention is being paid to stablemate Essential Quality, but Cox should have Mandaloun in a competitive position breaking from the No. 7 post with veteran jockey Florent Geroux in the saddle.

How to make 2021 Kentucky Derby predictions

After getting the inside scoop from the horse’s trainer, Goldberg’s top pick will shock you. He’s also backing an underdog who drew the “perfect post.” He’s sharing which horses to back here.
